MPL Offers Wireless Internet for Seniors

MONTCLAIR, NJ (March 11, 2021) — The Montclair Public Library will begin loaning WiFi hotspots for seniors without internet access.

In collaboration with Montclair Township, the Montclair Public Library has purchased twenty mobile hotspots using CARES Act funding. These devices can be borrowed by seniors residing in Montclair who do not have internet access at home. Devices can be borrowed for 28 days, with three possible renewals for a potential total loan period of 112 days.

The Library can arrange to deliver a wireless hotspot and/or other items in our collection for seniors through our Home Assisted Services (H.A.S.) program. The Library can provide limited technical assistance and troubleshooting to help seniors set up the device and get online.

“We hope these hotspots will help our seniors stay connected. Reliable internet has proven to be such an important part of life with the pandemic and it’s important for our seniors to have access to the outside world,” said Peter Coyl, Library Director. “With internet access provided by the Library, our local seniors can participate in video calls with family and friends; enroll in online courses such as those provided by the Montclair Institute for Lifelong Learning (MILL) and the Library’s Adult School; complete online deliveries; and even register for the COVID-19 vaccine.”

The Library will also use CARES Act funding for forthcoming “Senior Center in a Box” activity kits for seniors. The activity kits will provide a range of books, games, and other items designed to engage and entertain and will be available in the coming months.

For more information about borrowing a wireless hotspot, please email reference@montclairlibrary.org or call 973-744-0500 ext. 2234. The Library also loans additional wireless hotspots as well as Chromebook laptops to all age groups.
