Montclair Public Library Launches “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” Program to Encourage and Celebrate Early Literacy

MONTCLAIR, NJ (January 15, 2026) — Montclair Public Library is excited to announce the launch of “1000 Books Before Kindergarten,” a free early-literacy initiative designed to encourage families to read together, laying the foundation for a lifelong love of reading.

This program challenges parents and caregivers to read 1,000 books with their child before they reach kindergarten–a number that seems big, but is easy to achieve. Re-reading favorite books counts, making the program accessible and fun for families with busy schedules.

Based on evidence that the more children (ages 0-5) hear books read to them, the more prepared they will be to learn and enjoy reading upon reaching school age, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a simple and rewarding way for families to make reading a daily habit.

Children participating in the program will receive a reading log to track their progress and can come into the library to earn prizes for big milestones along the way, encouraging them to stay motivated and reach their goal.

“We’re thrilled to bring the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program to our community,” said Library Director Radwa Ali. “Reading together is one of the most powerful ways families can support early learning, and this program turns that daily habit into a fun, achievable goal. We can’t wait to celebrate our young readers as they reach each milestone.”

The program is open to children from birth to Kindergarten. Families can sign up online or at either of the library’s branches where they will receive materials to get started and learn more about early literacy resources available through the library.
